Gather scale feedback by inviting any user on the Google Play Store to join your beta program.
Open testing (formerly known as open beta) allows anyone on Google Play to join your test program. This track is useful for scaling up your testing audience, gathering massive metrics, and measuring server load before production launch.
1. What Makes Open Testing Different?
Unlike closed testing, you do not manage email lists. Instead:
Your app gets a public store listing with a "Join Beta" option.
Users can leave feedback directly in the Play Store, which is invisible to the general public.
You can specify a maximum limit on the number of open beta installations.
2. Setting Up an Open Test Track
In the Google Play Console, go to Release > Testing > Open testing:
Configure target regions and release tracks.
Specify your maximum tester limit (if any).
Upload your signed App Bundle (AAB) and rollout the release.
Note: Open testing releases still undergo full policy reviews by Google. Make sure your store listing content matches your app features to avoid metadata policy flags.
3. Harvesting Beta Feedback
Open testers can write reviews directly on Google Play. These reviews appear in the Console under Quality > Reviews. Since these reviews don't affect your public rating, utilize them to squash bugs before production.
